Doggie Style

It's (virtually) always a treat going to the local dog park; seeing how your dog interacts with the others, enjoying the sunshine with like-minded animal lovers, and trying not to stare at the better-looking bitches. The below video was taken in the spring of 2005 when Zoe was just under a year old:

Unfailingly, my Ollie picks a fight. He's having fun until he's not and then it's time to go. No warning, no exceptions. Gabi kind of hates to leave the house in general, so trips to the dog park are becoming few and far between.

Zoe's not the hugest fan of the park, either. She'll sniff the other dogs a bit, but generally sticks pretty close to me. I can tell she's ready to go when she starts staring at me as if to say, "Can we go now, please?"

I used to own a German Shepherd called Major, who loved to play football with just about anyone... he wasn't that picky on the opposition! He was happy to play with me but, if I was distracted for a short period, he would pick his football up in his mouth, quickly scan the park for an unsuspecting family and then gallop off in their direction.

This was usually about the time I would hear screams as people thought he was running over to attack their children.

Major would drop the ball in bewildered astonishment wondering just what had happened to cause them such a fright. I would shout out that he simply wanted his ball kicking and then spend the next hour waiting for the kids to get fed-up playing with him before we could head for home.

He was nearly 17 when he died and I dont think in all those years he ever quite worked out why people screamed when he ran over for a game of footie. I am certain it never entered his head he was meant to be a big and scarey guard dog!

Great story, Dave. 17 is quite an advanced age for a German Shepherd to live. You are very fortunate.

Zoe is pretty much always in the mood to play. Sometimes I get so caught up in what I'm doing on the net that I forget this. I'm working on giving her all the attention she deserves.

At this very moment, the cat is laying right in front of me as I type; I think she just likes being by the mouse.
