Eating Outside

Though I love eating out, I can't abide eating outside.

There are many reasons for this. First, there's no guarantee that the temperature will be comfortable (it could get too humid or be too breezy). Inside the restaurant, you needn't be concerned about such things. Outside, flies (or worse) can get into your food. This could also happen inside, but the likelihood is much less (though the chances of seeing a cockroach are much greater indoors). Then we have the problem of traffic noise and smokers.

A few months ago, I went to a Friday's in Wisconsin and was quite surprised when the maitre d' said, "Smoking or non?". I was like, "Excuse me, my good man, but I wasn't aware that I had teleported to 1973. Now, please excuse me while I head out to find a young boy named Barack. Legend foretells that one day, he will change the world. Oh, and do you know any places around here that sell frankencense and/or myrrh?"

There's also the problem of sunlight when eating outside. Course, they usually have those umbrellas, but that's sometime not enough and I don't like to have to wear sunglasses while munching on some fingers. In addition, I love sitting in booths which are generally only available within the restaurant's walls.

Quick comment about eating: I only ever put salt on one food item: corn on the cob. In my mind, if you have to put salt on something for it to taste good, why are you bothering eating it?

I love eating outside, but only if I'm downtown near the water. The fresh air and slight breeze makes for a wonderful experience.

I'll admit to being a salt junkie, but only on potato type foods and some meat and some...okay, I might have a problem (and future high blood pressure.)

Um...as a chef, I have to say that salt is wonderful! A tiny sprinkle of it can enhance any flavor. Even chocolate! I'm not saying douse your food in it, but seasoning your food IS a way to enhance the flavor and bring out it's best qualities.

There. :)

Wisconsin definitely needs to get on the bandwagon about the no smoking thing, especially in the bars.

I agree, unless it is the absolute best setting (weather, location etc...) I'd rather eat inside.

I can't say I'm a fan of eating outside, unless the weather is just right or the view is appealing.

Merry Christmas Thomas and all.

I love eating outside but have no idea why.

I dont use salt much either but only because I am lazy. Now that I have taken up cooking a bit I realize it does indeed bring out flavor in almost anything.

I was surprised the first time I made homemade chocolate icecream and the recipe called for salt!

More importantly, why do you ever have to put salt on anything if you're eating out. I have never had a single food item eating out that is under-salted. Under-seasoned, maybe, but not under-salted.

Eating at home, making your own food is a different thing entirely. :)

I am a big pusher of not using much salt--you start to taste the actual flavor of the food again. The downside is that eating out is almost impossible at that point--you drink so much water to dispel the saltiness, it's not too pleasant.
