Balls

With the baseball season officially getting underway in just a couple days, herewith is my earliest memory of being at a game:

Around about 1980, my father took me to a Minnesota Twins baseball game. One of my dad's friends and her daughter were at the game with us. I don't recall who the Twins were playing that afternoon, but I'm pretty sure they lost. The game was played at what was called "The Met" in Bloomington, Minnesota. The Mall of America is there now (in fact, in the amusement park area of the mall, there is a plaque indicating the exact location where home plate used to be). In 1982, the Twins moved to the Metrodome and I was witness to quite a few good games there in the early 90's (I would go on the Winona State bus to games with my brother, Mike). After a while, though, one grows tired of watching games indoors, so count me happy that plans are underway to return Twins baseball to the great outdoors in 2010.

have you ever fainted at a baseball game? lmao

Yeah, every time I see those foot-long weiners that they sell. :P

do they sell eggs as well?

Thomas said...

No, but I can't eat eggs, anyway. I'm lactose. When I was a kid, I could eat scrambled eggs, but only if they were totally covered in ketchup.

not an egg fan here either. i just thought maybe the eggs would take you on a little trip down memory lane (back to 7th grade sex ed)...

Oh, I see. Yeah, sex-ed class is something else. No doubt about it.

Alright. You should know that you can't just make a reference to "foot long weiners" without me having to reply.

Too bad I don't have a foot long bun.

Paige took the words right out of my mouth!

LOL.

I love baseball, and you KNOW I love the footlong weiner.

LOL.

A few years ago, I went with a friend to a Vikings football game and he bought a footlong dog. I honestly couldn't believe how big it was. He polished the thing off in just a few minutes.

I'm not impressed. I've "polished" the weiner AND finished it off in under a minute.

That's just the way I roll.

The Met was great.

My first baseball game was the Baltimore Oriels (sp?) against the A's. I think Baltimore won. There was a bunch of family at the game, and my dad's best friend Jerry (my godmother's ex) bought me a baseball cap and my dad bought me a teddy bear which I probably still have somewhere (sadly, the baseball cap was destroyed by our Black Lab). Was pretty cool.

The only other game I went to was the Phillies...but I won't go there cuz it was a bad experience. Haha!

My father was a compulsive gambler; so much so my mother assumed control of his pay cheque from which she gave him an "allowance". If he wasn't at home napping he'd be at work or the horse races. It would have been great if he had taken me to baseball or hockey games. Although he did take me to a few races, it just wasn't all that exciting for a kid.
